The regulatory landscape
Aerospace and Defense is the most regulated industry in which SAP is deployed. A&D companies operate under the Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), and the Defense FAR Supplement (DFARS). Each translates directly into specific SAP configuration requirements, from the chart of accounts to allocation cycles to reporting structures.
Programs above certain contract value thresholds must comply with ANSI/EIA-748 EVMS guidelines, subject to DCMA surveillance and DCAA audit. Export-controlled programs add ITAR restrictions on data access and system architecture. Cybersecurity requirements layer in NIST 800-171 and the evolving CMMC framework. The penalty for non-compliance is not abstract: withheld progress payments, contract actions, or loss of future awards.
How SAP fits Aerospace & Defense
SAP Project Systems (PS) is the backbone of A&D financial architecture. Rather than organizing costs primarily by cost center, A&D companies structure the general ledger around Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) elements tied to individual contracts and programs. PMMO (Project Manufacturing and Material Operations) extends PS into the shop floor, linking production orders and material movements back to the program WBS.
Controlling (CO) manages the indirect rate structures that allocate overhead, G&A, and fringe across programs with properly segregated cost pools. Materials Management (MM) handles long-cycle procurement, engineering changes, and the configuration-controlled parts typical of defense manufacturing. For EVMS compliance, SAP integrates with scheduling tools like Primavera and Microsoft Project and with purpose-built extensions like Twenty5 IPE.
The result, when configured correctly, is a single system of record that supports program managers, controllers, auditors, and executives with the same underlying data. Poorly configured SAP environments in A&D fail the opposite way: parallel spreadsheets, reconciliation cycles, and month-end scrambles that erode the value of having an ERP in the first place.
RevTech's approach in Aerospace & Defense
Every A&D engagement at RevTech is staffed with cleared US-citizen consultants who have worked inside A&D primes, sub-primes, and specialty manufacturers. Our teams know the difference between a CAS-compliant cost allocation and one that looks compliant until DCAA asks for the supporting documentation. We architect classified and ITAR-controlled environments with the security boundaries baked in from day one, not retrofitted after an audit finding.
Where appropriate, we bring Twenty5 IPE for EVMS compliance and Dassian Solutions for GovCon procurement and contracts through our go-to-market partnerships. The engagement model is senior practitioners, onshore, no offshore handoffs. For complex transformations, we apply the SWAT methodology: a Lead Solution Architect supported by specialists across Finance, Logistics, Technology, and Data, with mandatory cross-workstream alignment at every phase gate.
